Chapter Fourteen

Once she was alone in the guest bedroom, for a moment Emily wanted to jump up and down like she had as a child. The room had a living area that contained a small beige leather sofa, a tiny kitchen with everything a guest could need, a mini refrigerator, a microwave, a fancy coffee maker, and built-in shelves filled with books. The eye-catcher was the small, winding staircase that led to the loft bedroom. There was a large bed with cream-colored bedding and decorative pillows in pale green, a small chair and table in one corner, then another door that led to the en suite.

“Wow,” she said upon first seeing the room. She didn’t care that she let that slip; anyone would have that response. “This is the silo room?”

“It is,” Zach said, watching her as she explored the room.

The old silo contained a shower, the roundness of the silo wall untouched, yet modernized with a rainfall shower. Built-in nooks and crannies on the opposite side held soap, shampoo and washcloths. A soaker tub centered below a giant window invited one to soak off the worries of the day. She turned to Zach. “This is the most awesome room . . . rooms. I’ve always wondered how the silo was used.”

“A big shower, as you can see. I was impressed, but I took the master suite because the bed fits me better.” He laughed. “It’s tough sometimes when you’re tall.”

“I know. I always had trouble finding jeans that were long enough when I was younger,” she said.

“If you need anything during the night, my room is downstairs. There’s a door at the back of the main room,” Zach told her.

Emily couldn’t imagine needing anything more, given her situation. “No, I’m good. I’ll just . . .” She looked at the tub. “Maybe soak a bit, if you don’t mind.”

“Do what makes you comfortable.” He scanned her from top to bottom. Emily normally felt uncomfortable when a guy looked at her that way, but with Zach she only felt excitement.

“I have a T-shirt you can sleep in,” Zach told her. “Give me a minute.” He whirled out of the room so fast, she felt a slight gust of air. She didn’t want to familiarize herself with the rooms until Zach returned. Emily wasn’t normally too nosy—well, she really was when she needed to be—but she was more than curious how the inside of the silo wall had been incorporated into a shower, let alone into the farmhouse.

She could hear Zach on the stairs. He had a funny look on his face when he returned, almost as if he were embarrassed. “Look, I’m not good at this, so I brought you three of my shirts. I wasn’t sure what you like to wear to bed.”

If Zach continued to talk about the bed and what she slept in, who knows what might happen?

“I’m sure they’re all fine. Thanks. I appreciate everything, Zach. I . . .” She wanted to apologize again for her earlier assumptions, her horrid manners at The Mill, but didn’t.
